Towards the end of one hundred years internecine conflict, which began in middle of the15th century, Kawashma castle belonged to Lord Kawashima. He died in the fighting in 1576.
When Hedeyoshi Toyotomi unified Japan,he sent Iemasa Hachisuka as lord of Awa (Tokushimacounty now) in 1585. Lord Hachisuka repaired Kawashima castle completely to make Kawashima castle on of nine castle in Awa.
Dokan Hayashi, who was one of Hachisuka’s men warlord of Kawashima castle. He went to the Korean war in 1594 and donated a sword and saddle to Kawashima shrine to ensure his victory.
When the Tokugawa shogunate completed the unification of Japan in1603, they issued a law in 1638 “One castle in one fiefdom”, thus Kawashima castle became a ruin.
The current castle was built in 1982 and cost nearly one million pounds. It is very small but is the pride of Kawashima town. It is used as a restaurant or for parties.
