Tonfa

Opinion is divided on the origins of the Tonfa, but it seems that the Okinawans devised the idea of using grain mill handles as Tonfa. It is a type of weapon unique to Okinawa and no Tonfa existed in the traditional martial arts of mainland Japan. It is very difficult to manipulate the Tonfa as a pair, and proficiency requires lengthy training.

The weapon is used in pairs and is of wood, again red oak or white oak preferably in keeping with the Bo.  The length of the weapon is also the same requirements as the Sai, about three centimetres past the elbow when gripped.
